A proposed project hopes to connect the existing Indian Trail path at its northern end to the Virgil Gilman Trail at its southern end using an on-street bikeway system. The on-street path will extend out to West Aurora High School via Prairie Street, LeGrande Boulevard, Garfield Avenue and Gladstone Avenue. It will end at the intersection of Gladstone and Galena Boulevard to provide safe crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The on-street bikeway system will include striping new 5-foot wide bike lanes and adding sharrows, or shared lane markings, along Edgelawn Drive. Additionally the plan calls for reducing the existing four lanes on Edgelawn to two lanes from Illinois Avenue to Kenilworth Place and widening road shoulders on Edgelawn south of Kenilworth to accommodate the bike lanes, adding signage and an enhanced street crossing.
In an effort to keep residents informed of upcoming roadway projects, the city of Aurora will present the Edgelawn Drive Bikeway project at an open house from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, in the 5th floor conference rooms at City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place.
During the open house, City staff will be available to answer questions and take comments.
