“Mary Poppins” at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora is, in one word, phenomenal. You were expecting another word, weren’t you? Trust me. I could easily fill this review with words, quotes, and lyrics from the musical, but I won’t. I’m just going to tell you about my experience seeing “Mary Poppins” with my family on a Sunday night in downtown Aurora. We all love “Mary Poppins,” so we were excited that all four of us could go and enjoy a production in a theater that is about 12 blocks from our home. We were not mistaken. If there ever was a right decision, it was taking our four-year-old son and our eight-year-old daughter to see “Mary Poppins” in the downtown that we love. From start to finish, both of our children eyed the stage without coercion. We all did. The vivid colors, the smooth dance moves, Emily Rohm as Mary Poppins – it was all like a wonderful fantasy. I was exceedingly impressed with the costume and set changes; one of my favorite parts had the cast in steampunk outfits performing a pretty hip version of one of the show’s most popular songs. We were clapping and hooting with the audience after nearly every number. “Mary Poppins” is a sweet story and that comes across well in director Rachel Rockwell’s version. The added magic is a plus, along with Matt Crowle’s performance as Bert. “Mary Poppins” is one of the finest productions as of yet on the Paramount stage. It’s practically perfect for all ages. Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.
“Mary Poppins” is at Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora through January 4. Call (630) 896-6666 for tickets.
