Thieves not welcome at downtown library. DVDs locked up

AURORA – Movies, a popular item for patrons to borrow from the downtown Aurora Public Library, are being relocated from a public browsing area on the second floor of the library to a non-public area following the thefts of more than 200 DVDs since the beginning of the year.

The library has 13,000 DVDs in its collection. Each costs the library about $20.

While the library works on finding new ways for patrons to browse DVD titles, the movies will be stored in an area where only library staff will be able to retrieve them.

When the library moves into its new building in late 2014, there will be a separate audiovisual room that will have its own secure checkout area, Library Director Eva Luckinbill said.

As the library continues to work on ways to make DVD titles “browse-able,” patrons may use the online catalog to find movies, or they may consult a reference librarian who will help them search for a particular DVD or help them choose a DVD to their specifications.
